Using the MDT database: “ZTI error opening SQL Connection. SQL server does not exist or access denied”

For one of my current projects we’re using MDT 2012 Update 1 and we configured the MDT DB using the database wizard as we’re using the MDT database as source for our deployment. It holds host name and IP configuration of the target machines (as we can remove the need to press F12 for PXE with the use of RES Automation Manager 2012 we have a great ZTI solution).

But we ran into a problem when using the database as the targets would use the DB information so they were deployed using the automatically generated hostsnames and based on DHCP. So when looking into the results in the C:\Windows\Temp folder we discovered that we got an error:

VMware acquires DynamicOps and Nicira, first steps to a heterogeneous hypervisor cloud solution?

Troubleshooting session log offs on Microsoft RDS

At the moment I’m helping out on a project that has a Windows 2008 R2 RDS farm with some problems. The issue that was seen was that at random moments the users could log on to a server but was logged of immediately with out any errors in the event logs. First thing I did was install the missing updates and searched for hotfixes for the RDS farm and found KB2312539. It’s a pretty big list containing the current hotfixes for RDS:

Citrix: What to know about HDX RealTime Optimization Pack for Microsoft Lync

At Citrix Synergy 2011 in Barcelona we had a special session on new features that would be released, one of the features was HDX RealTime Optimization Pack for Microsoft Lync. Stefan Pieters and Martijn Bosschaart showed us a demo set with two XenDesktop sessions, on the session without the Optimization pack installed we saw the only vCPU spike up to 100% and the video/audio quality wasn’t really good but best practice is to use two vCPU’s instead of just one vCPU. The second XenDesktop session had the Optimization pack installed and we could see no spikes in vCPU usage but video/audio quality was impressive!

Follow-me-data, a quick glance

The last couple of months there where a lot of announcements made involving follow-me-data, all the vendors have seen the potential in building an ‘Enterprise Dropbox’ but there are still a lot of questions around there products, Dan Brinkmann recently wrote a blog on which functionality he would like to see in these Dropbox-replacements and as I answered to his question on twitter on functionality I agree with most of them:

Citrix: Is there a future for thin clients?

Last month Barry Schiffer and I did a presentation on E2Evc, the subject? “Enterprise clients. when to use what and why?”

The last couple of meetings I had with customers this was a very hot topic, people are rethinking their client strategy with BYOD and CYO as alternatives to their traditional desktop strategy.
