Another week, another reference architecture in the making… This time I’m working on a new reference architecture for Hyper-V 2016, SCVMM 2016 and XenDesktop 7.13. Obviously PVS 7.13 is in the mix too so I’ve been building out the environment but needed some PowerShell one-liners and easy scripts to get some work done and figured I could put them in a short blog for my own reference.

Earlier this week one of our SEs asked the following question on an internal Slack channel: “I have a customer that is looking for an automated process to identify VDI VMs that haven’t been used, notify the users, and then ultimately reclaim them if noone has logged on in a certain amount of time”.
During the last Dutch Citrix User Group I had the honour to present a 15 minutes ‘pitch’ on Citrix AppDisks which is a newly introduced feature in XenDesktop 7.8. It’s Citrix’s implementation of the popular layering solutions for application distribution.
Being involved with the EUC space I get to talk about virtual desktops.. A lot. Sizing them is something that gets discussed a lot but what components do we actually need in a desktop? What is the anatomy of a desktop from a ‘physical’ perspective. Although it’s going back to basics I do think it’s good to take a step back every once in a while and reevaluate decisions.
After reading this excellent blogpost from Andrew Nelson (Distributed Systems Specialist at Nutanix) on Acropolis Image and Cloning Primer for Automation and combining that with this blogpost from Raghu Nandan (Director of Product Management) on Setting up Citrix XA/XD with an Acropolis Hypervisor cluster I figured we were missing one vendor on this list.. One of the things I’ve been working on since I started at Nutanix is the Nutanix documentation script. Luckily there already is an PowerShell framework to document AD, DHCP but also XenApp, XenDesktop and PVS for instance.
